Oxford

Site Significance: 3

St Frideswide is the patron saint of Oxford, and her monastery is believed to have been located on what is now Christ Church Cathedral. St Frideswide was considered an important saint for healing during the Middle Ages. The Cathedral still contains the relics of St Frideswide, although at the Reformation these were mixed with the bones of a local cleric's wife in an attempt to discourage veneration. Be sure also to visit the church at nearby Binsey (several miles out of the city) which is also associated with the saint and whose grounds contain a holy well.
