Whitby

Site Significance: 3

Founded as a double monastery (male and female monastics) in the Celtic tradition by St Oswiu and St Hilda in the 7th century. The important Synod of Whitby took place here in 664AD, resolving the conflict between the Celtic and Roman rites on different issues including the marking of the monastic tonsure and the calculation of the date of Easter (Pascha). It was determined that the Northumbrian church would follow the Roman customs on these points.
