Dewsbury

Site Significance: 3

Dewsbury is traditionally associated with the missionary activity of St Paulinus of York, who is said to have preached and baptised here in the early 7th century during the conversion of the kingdom of Northumbria. According to longstanding local tradition, Paulinus baptised large numbers of converts in the River Calder, and a preaching cross once marked the site of his ministry. Fragments of a stone cross from later in the Saxon period (mid 9th century) as well as other artifacts are preserved in a heritage centre within the church.
