St Winefride lived during the 7th century and was born into a noble family. Her mother, Wenlo, was the niece of St Beuno. She was determined to become a nun, spurning the advances of the suitor Caradog. Caradog was enraged at this and beheaded her, the spot where her head fell sprung forth with water. St Beuno rejoined her head to her body and she returned to life. She lived as a monastic, first at Holywell and later at Gwytherin where she founded a convent.
