The first Christian emperor of Rome, St Constantine was proclaimed Emperor in York (Eboracum) following the death of his father, the general Constantius. His joint proclamation of the Edict of Milan in 313AD was the first time that Christianity had received official toleration under Roman law. Eventually he became Emperor of both the Western & Eastern halves of the empire, and called a Church Council in 325AD to address the heresy of Arianism which was afflicting the Church.
