Saint Wilfrid

Born into a noble family, he was educated at Lindisfarne then Canterbury and Rome and returned to Northumbria and founded a monastery at Ripon. He attended the Synod of Whitby in 664AD, advocating for the Roman position on the calculation of Easter (there was a dispute between the Celtic and Roman practices). He then founded a monastery at Hexham also in Northumbria, before going to the South Saxons (Sussex) and working to spread the Gospel amongst them, starting monasteries including one at Selsey.
