St Ia was born into a royal family in Ireland in the fifth century, but the young princess wished to forsake her worldly cares and become a nun. She miraculously travelled across the Irish Sea on a leaf and landed in Cornwall. She was put to death by King Tewdwr Mawr of Penwith on the River Hayle and is buried at what is now St Ives.
