The great missionary saint and Enlightener of Ireland, he was born in late Roman Britain but was captured by pirates when he was 16 years old and taken to Ireland. After being a slave for 6 years, he escaped and returned to his family, but later yearned to return to Ireland and spread the Gospel amongst the people there. He was ordained priest and later became the first bishop of Ireland.
