Bawburgh

Site Significance: 3

Dedicated to St Walstan, this church was the site of a miracle upon the saint's death. He worked as a farmhand and when the farmer promised to make him his heir, St Walstan said he would only accept two ox-calves. The saint was a great friend of animals and prayed for all - both man and beast. When St Walstan reposed in 1016, the oxen drew his body to the church, reputedly crossing the River Wensum without wetting their hooves and entered the church through a wall which opened miraculously. A nearby holy well in the orchard behind the church marks one of the spots where the oxen paused on their journey.
