Glastonbury

Site Significance: 1

Glastonbury Abbey is one of the most ancient centres of Christianity in England. According to long-standing pious tradition, New Testament-era figures such as St Joseph of Arimathea, and in some accounts even St Mary Magdalene, are said to have visited this place in the earliest days of the Gospel’s spread. The abbey also became closely associated with saints of the early British and Anglo-Saxon church, including St Patrick, St Brigid, and St Dunstan, who was educated here before becoming Archbishop of Canterbury. Rebuilt after the Norman Conquest and later destroyed at the Dissolution, the ruins remain a place of quiet devotion, prayer, and remembrance of the faith handed down through the centuries.
