Bardney

Site Significance: 3

The abbey was founded in 697 by King Æthelred of Mercia who become its first abbot. The monastery destroyed by a Viking raid in 869, but was refounded after the Norman conquest. During the Reformation, six of the monks were executed for involvement in the Lincolnshire Rising and it was subsequently disbanded. The Venerable Bede relates how Queen Osthryth of Mercia moved the relics of her uncle, St Oswald here around 679, but the monks initially were resistant to receiving his relics due to his conquests of this area. His body remained outside the monastery, but during the night a light shone from the bier up to heaven, convincing the monastery of his piety and his relics were then brought inside. In 909AD they were translated to St Oswald's Priory in Gloucestershire to be kept safe from Danish raids.
