Saint Oswald of Heavenfield

As King of the Northumbrians, he defeated the king of Gwynedd, Cadwallon ap Cadfan, at the Battle of Heavenfield in c633AD, praying with his soldiers and constructing a wooden cross before the battle. At this time the Kingdom of Gwynedd was in alliance with the pagan Penda, King of the Mercians. St Oswald was later killed in engagement with the Penda at the Battle of Maserfield in c641AD, and his body was dismembered. His relics are at Durham Cathedral.
